World of Warcraft: soon Free to Play?

Postby Dark Mayu » July 7th, 2009, 9:08 pm

Yep, you read right, WoW might become free to play. No monthly costs anymore.

The Game Director Tom Chilton mentioned that in future, financing via "Micro-Transactions" might be possible. In other words, players can play for free and buy specific ingame items for real money, just like most MMORPGs (Runes of Magic, Rappelz, etc).

The entire Interview can be read here

Under these circumstances, I could imagine to play this game again actually. The most annoying part; paying for a game monthly you actually bought before wouldn't be an issue anymore. However, most of us know Blizzard, so the question is: Will they really pass on this money bringer?

So now in WoW it's okay if U BYE GOLD so long as it's from Blizzard? Well it will put gold farmers out of business but if anything it will make WoW even more MONOTONOUS than it already is. :Ton: Why even play if you can just buy the items you need. I bet they'll make it so you can only buy like certain items every few months so you're well geared for the next big raid instance or PvP Season. Yet at the very same time a few months later all that lewt you're wasting your time grinding to get will be available to buy with the next patch.

Meh either way I have nothing nice to say about MMO's or WoW... So I'll shut up now. :Ton:

And yet you say it so well Strange Angel (:D

Hmm, though I have not played the game, what little I can make out after talking to people and looking through the forums is that the forums are full of 8 year olds (though for this discussion, that's not relevent), gameplay = grinding and Blizzard don't care what you do as long as you give them $ and don't try and take any.

Wow seems to be a cashcow for Blizzard (and who doesn't like $?), so even though it might not be possible to charge money for playing WoW, you can bet that Blizzard will be doing everything they can to make sure that this does not happen.

Call me a cynic, but would you want your fat company to lose millions per year?
