Why Windows 8 Scares Me

Postby loder » July 22nd, 2012, 11:20 am

This is quite a good little preview, the guy approaches Windows 8 enthusiastically and is open minded. However after ten minutes it becomes apparent just how bad this operating system really is.

metro is mainly designed for tablets, the normal desktop is forgotten with it, if they made it more friendly with the default keyboard and mouse, i may get it for my netbook, like what it forgets to mention in this video is the fact that it uses alot less processing power then windows 7 and as what we saw in the video, looks alot nicer, which is something windows has struggled with. if the final desktop version makes it alot more easy for the standard keyboard and mouse, i am sure it will be a fine operating system, like by re-adding the start button and so on. like it most certainly something i may get for my netbook in 2013 when it has been developed abit further. like my netbook is very weak, but from what i have seen from stats and things, it would run alot faster then any operating system i could currently get for it apart from possibly android at this current point in time. the person in the video also did not make it clear if he was using the beta aimed at touch screen controls where you can use a mouse and keyboard. or was he using the version specially made for the desktop.

Re: Why Windows 8 Scares Me

I'm going to wait at least a year before trying it again. There was a startling post on AtomicPC and it seems Microsoft are adamant that the desktop PC is going to die. The Windows 8 operating system looks like its mainly focused towards buying apps from the Microsoft store. A few developers I've spoken to are adamant that its a useless product and does not fulfil their needs.

AtomicPC wrote:During Microsoft's Sydney launch for Windows 8 the desktop PC was conspicuously absent, as was pricing and availability of full versions of the new OS.

We just returned to the office from Microsoft’s local Windows 8 launch, an event full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Focus was squarely placed upon the tablet experience, with nary a mention of what the new operating system means for the desktop. Curiously, Microsoft couldn’t even give us an indication of what the full price for the operating system would be, and the demonstration area set up for journalists to ‘experience’ Windows 8 had a single, solitary Alienware X51 system flying the traditional PC flag.

Instead it was tablets and All-In-Ones as far as the eye could see. This was an event where the term gaming meant Fruit Ninja, where the Windows desktop appeared briefly as the place where Office lives, and software means apps purchased from the Microsoft store. It was testament to what we have been suspecting all along, that Windows 8 is more about stemming the flow of the uninformed to Android, iOS and OSX than it is about delivering a product suitable to the traditional Windows crowd.

I think Windows 8 represents the biggest foul up in Microsoft's corporate history. The feedback, even from the earliest developer preview, was along the lines of "this really sucks!" But they completely ignored public opinion, and pressed on with it anyway. They really do deserve one hell of a bloody nose over this Franken-OS. I'm a Microsoft developer by trade, and yet I'm seriously considering moving to Linux after this fiasco. But we'll see just how bad the whiplash is first. If no one buys Windows 8, then perhaps they might relent and issue a patch for it that allows you to disable Metro UI, and restore Aero and the Start button. But I find that unlikely, to be honest. They seem to have become far too arrogant, and are now reduced to operating out of an, "Argh!! Look out! APPLE!" mentality.
