Need A New Graphics Card
by Keylek » February 13th, 2011, 5:16 pm
Hi ModsReloaded.
recently, i have been planning of getting a new graphics card, and i have got two ideas in my head, but yet i can not decide between the two. the two graphics cards in question are the ATI Radeon HD 5830 and the nVidia GeForce GTX 295. the prices for these cards are 175 pounds for the nVidia GeForce GTX 295 (which is normally over 300 pounds) and the ATI Radeon HD 5830 which is 180 pounds. but yet the biggest thing about these cards is that they are very similar, and i cant decide which one would be best. like i have already asked several of my friends about this, and they have all came up with the same conclusion that they can decide due to how similar they are, and how is always better in one area but the other better in another. like here is a comparison list of the graphics cards....
http://www.hwcompare.com/5065/geforce-g ... n-hd-5830/
the geforce seems to be more powerful in frames wise, ut yet not as powerful as clock speed and uses 65% more power, as for the ATI does not perform as well but yet has better shaders, is more up to date, and has DX11 support.
like this is difficult for me due to i want the graphics card to last a long time, i do not want to replace it again in a few years time so the DX11 seems best, but yet the graphics cards are just so similar, like the gefore i can over clock due to i have a intel processor, but yet the ati has a better clock so i do not need to over clock that. the ati has a life time warranty, but yet the geforce has more memory and can support better settings.
i really want a graphics card which will last me a long time, and is good for high quality gaming with at least 30 frames per second and is under 200 pounds and will be good for games like mass effect 3, elder scrolls 5 and dragon age 2 which are all coming out very soon. my screen resolution is 1920x1080 and i have windows 7 ultimate installed on my computer which supports DX11
please reply quickly with this topic, the geforce is in a pre-owned shop. but is in very good quality, but the ati is brand new, but yet i do not know how long the geforce will be left in the shop, its been in there for a few weeks now, but i don’t know for how long it will still be there for, please help me decide with this, am really confused here.
the ATI has 1024 MB of memory but yet the geforce has 1792MB of memory, so this has made this chose even harder.
please help
and please remember, i need one which will last a long time, (like over 5 years) i do not want to be replacing it again in 3 years time.
here is another link of specs for people to compare, trust me, i have been looking at them for hours and i still cant decide...

there has been one problem i have seen with the graphics cards, the geforce needs a 8 pin and a six pin power cable and the ati needs two 6 pin power cables i only have one 6 for a graphics card, but yet i only have one 6 pin cable. i have been able to sort of find out that it is possable to get a coupler for a power cable to turn it into a 8 pin, and i have seen a few of them for sale over the internet, but yet it shows them all for the old power units, because i have a newer sata power unit, which means all the power cables are sata versions, and not the ones which where used for IDE hard drives. so is ther anyway i can turn a power cable into a 8 pin cable and then change that so it can connect to a sata power connection?
i need to do this if i want either one. the option i have is to buy a brand new PSU which has the correct pin cables, but yet this is a last resort. i know i have already asked for alot of help, but please can someone also help me with this problem.

Well I'd say go with the Ati, DX11 means you can use it longer before you need to replace it. As for your power supply you can get a 6 pin y splitter cable, just make sure the card does not stress your power supply too much :)
There is no such thing as a stupid question, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots.
