so lets say i wanted to get the ati, the only thing i would need to buy is a 6 pin y spitter. but yet if lets say i wanted the geforce, would i not be able to connect a 6 pin to a 8 pin converter onto the 6 pin splitter? but yet risk a large ammount of power being used?
the other option would be to do more research to turn a sata power cable into a 8 pin, which should be more safe.

modern cards draw a lot of juice, it's the total watts of usage you need to watch out for. The y splitter can handle the power going through it, it was designed exactly for this kind of application. For these type of cards you would need at a minimum either a 500W gaming psu or a 750W generic psu. Anything less and **** might start getting dicey.
and yea you can put the 6 to 8 pin converter onto a y split cable. the voltage drop should be minimal. The basic rule of thumb is the more metal between the psu and whatever its connected to the harder it has to work.
It would most likely be safer to use the converter than try to modify the power supply cables. All it takes is one little slip up and boom, no more graphics card.

There is no such thing as a stupid question, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots.

well what should i get then? you say get the ati, even though its no where near as powerfull as the geforce, even the 5850 is no where near as powerfull and thats 230 pounds. like i just want to know what will be best for me, i have a screen resolution of 1920x1080 or 1080p if you are talking about hdmi cables. it only has a vga port at the back, and all of the grapgics cards i am planning of getting make a resolution big enough. but i just want a graphics card which wil,l give be a good enough resolution with very good graphics and will last at least another 5 years (maybe 7-8 if i am lucky) with a budget up to 250 pounds for one, and i am planning og only having my one screen for along time. like its a good screen. abit bad seeing it only has a vga port on it and terrable built in speakers. but yet its fine for my needs (i have external spekers so i dont care about them, and i have had them speakers since 2005)
so please, can you help me decide what would be best or sugget a graphics card which would be in my specs. i just want something to last at least another 5 years and is powerfull enouth to keep good graphics for all the new game releases for the next 5 years if possable with at least normal graphics.
like for example will this be any good then?
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/asus-eah6 ... 3-pdt.html
its in my price range, it has two 6 pin slots, it has DX11, more powerfull clock, ect... but yet not as good as a pixel and texture transfer rate as the geforce.

Well if you want raw power the geforce is a good way to go but with it being only dx10 you will probability want to replace it before 5 years is up. I don't like the geforce range my self because they run so hot but thats just personal bias. the Asus looks like a nice little card that will do you well but its factory overclocked so it will most likely not make it to the five year mark. It all comes down to what you value most, power or dx11 support at your price range you can't have bowth. Sorry I can't just point to one and say get that one. It's a personal decision and every one has a different opinion on what makes a good card. In my experience if you want a long lasting card go for a mid range card the high power ones tend not to last the distance.
Gah too much thinking. Look in my opinion the ati Radeon HD 5850 is the way to go, that is if you can find one at a price that agrees with you. The geforce is second hand so there's no telling how long it will last and the 5830 is kinda wimpy performance wise.
But please do remember this is just my personal opinion and I am biased towards Ati.

i think the ati radeon hd 5850 then maybe alright. i have compared it to the graphics card i have now, and its many times better...
http://www.hwcompare.com/379/radeon-hd- ... n-hd-5850/
it seems powerfull enough for my needs, and i can get a better PSU when the games improve more, so a 6pin y splitter then will be good untill then. the price on pc world is about 230 pounds, but yet i am sure i can find it cheaper online for about 180-200 pounds (the price i wanted) but yet is this most certainly the best one for my price range? because i really do not want to be regreting it after a month of buying it. like i am just making sur enow that is this trully the best one for me. like i like the ati's, like they maybe not as powerfull, but yet use alot less power and normally last longer and are alright, like the graphics card i have now is a lower range ati, but yet it works fine with new vegas and my other games like dragon age and so on, but i know it will not be any good for longer (expecally seeing i normally have it on the smallest wide screen resolution so i can play it with the good graphics) like i am going to sell it to a friend of mine who wants a basic gaming computer with a small lcd screen, so it would be good for him as a starter, like its been good for me, so it should be alright for him untill he can afford a better one.
but anyways. the 5850 seems alright, but i just need abit more confermation to make sure this is perfect for me, like i will be getting a graphics card which will be with me for at least 5 years, so of cource i want to make sure it will be the best for my needs, thats why i am abit paranoid. please understand
thank you anyways so far.
