What in God's Green Earth are you people smoking?! F.E.A.R?! That game isn't even scary to me. Silent Hill 1-4 on the other hand all have really eerie vibe. Grant you 4 was a bit sloppy, but I give it leeway because it was never supposed to be a Silent Hill game in the first place. Silent Hill 1-3 are like the Holy Trilogy of Horror games though. o_o Silent Hill 2 being the peek of the series. I mean Silent Hill 2 was so well done I bet the late H.P. Lovecraft the All Time Grandmaster of Psychological Horror would give it a nod of approval.
Okay, so Silent Hill the Movie sucked compared to the game. It's a popcorn flick. Silent Hill 5 was cringe worthy and just plain bad! Silent Origins OMFG that was probably the worse yet. I have been playing a little bit of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories in small doses. Usually right before I go to sleep I'll lie there with my PSP and play, and it's actually pretty good so far! Those ghouls are well... After my first encounter I had a nightmare that night. HAH Silent Hill isn't a good game to fall asleep too, but I am gauging it based on how much it can **** with my dreams. I'm not that far in Shattered Memories though, because I'm playing it very slowly on the side. But so far I'm shocked it's not bad! Not exactly Holy Trilogy good, but hey I'm surprised.
I digress, F.E.A.R.?! SERIOUSLY! What about The Clock Tower, Fatal Frame, Phantasmagoria, Eternal Darkness, heck that new one on Steam that's just AMAZING! The Path! Even the first Condemned on the 360 was creepy! Though Condemned 2 SUCKED HARD!
F.E.A.R. though, is nothing more than a cheap gimmicky jump out scare every now and then... It's nothing original. I mean even Doom 3 was creepier than F.E.A.R. Blehhh Once I start up my little column I'm going to have my share of rants that will gain me much ire. Because F.E.A.R. is one of those games I was rambling about that doesn't have a soul! It's like the Dev's sat down and were like,
Dev 1: HEY! Lets like make a generic FPS, but then like make things all trippy every now and then like in Doom 3!
Dev 2: Yeah and we can totally f*ck on the player's head like in Silent Hill randomly, only instead of an omnipresent malevolent Lovecraftian supernatural force beyond all human comprehension being behind it all, it'll be some psychic.
Dev 1: Totally because I mean people hate when you don't explain what's going on to them. You need to have a logical basis for the horror. I mean who wants to think about the unknown it's scary right?
Dev 4: *facepalm*
Dev 3: Totally, and to top it off we'll throw in that little girl from the Ring to be the psychic doing it!
Dev 4: Oh god kill me now.
Dev 2: Totally sweet! And you know instead of like having our guys helpless when things go bugfuck crazy, our protagonist will be a total bad ass part of an elite fighting force.
Dev 1: **** yeah lots of guns, and anything you encounter you just headshot!
Dev 3: **** YEAH TEA BAG THOSE BITCHES!
Dev 2: TEA BAGGING FTW!
Dev 4: I think I'm going to throw myself in front of a train, excuse me.
Dev 2: See our game is so bad ass scary he's going to kill himself!
So children yes you can expect stuff like that in my new section once I get it up and running LOL! But F.E.A.R. To me isn't only a bad horror game, it's just a bad game period! People who get scared by it really need to be exposed to some actual gets in your head and **** with you for weeks horror.
It is my ire for games like F.E.A.R., Gears of Testosterone *ahem* I mean Gears of War, and Halo that will likely cause a stir in my reviews, but I do hope to get my audience to think if anything. Also even if I hate a game you cherish and bash the hell out of it like I just did with F.E.A.R. Do remember game reviews are subjective in a nature. So if you like the game keep on liking it. When people bash games I happen to love, I don't care and will keep on playing them.
So in advance if I am knocking a game you may like I am not knocking you. You may knock games I love, here I'll make a list of some all time faves,
Zelda 2 (NES)
Castlevania 2 (NES)
Super Marior World (SNES)
Earthbound (SNES)
Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall (PC)
Baldurs Gate (PC)
Silent Hill (PS)
Silent Hill 2 (PS2)
Silent Hill 3 (PS2)
Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines (PC)
Saints Row 2 (360)
Dragon Age Origins (PC)
I think that covers it when it comes to my top favorite games of all time. Though I may be missing a few. Believe me, many scoff at the fact I loved Saint's Row 2 so much I consider it one of the best games I ever played!
But Hell I love Saint's Row 2, and there's Nothing that's going to change that ever! If you see a title among those up there that I totally love that you hate, bash away, it isn't going to keep me from loving the game.

Ha Ha that probability is how it went down. but I can't be too mad at fear, without fear the would be no p.a.n.i.c.s, plus I kinda like playing fear. To be honest I've never found horror games scary, just give me a zombie and a shotgun to shoot it with and I'm a happy man. that said the fatal frame games were very good. Heh I can't pick just one. but I can list a few more :)
Splatter house
Shin Megami Tensei
dino crisis
onimusha
alone in the dark

Resident Evil (the 1st non-remake part) was the 1st horror game I played and at that time (I think I was around 15, maybe 16), I was quite scared, especially because of not having enough ammunition.
While the 2nd part had the best shock effect at that time (damn those arms!), it wasn't scary and part 3 tried to force the fear onto you in an obvious way (though if Nemesis jumps out of a door and runs towards you, you're heart will start pounding)
Silent Hill is great. The 1st part was scary, the 2nd revolutinary scary, the 3rd part visually scary and the 4th part most of the time not scary. Part 5 was not scary as well, it was just annoying tbh.
Part 3 was my personal favourite because of the great effects, interesting story and awesome atomsphere.
My favourite would be Fatal Frame (aka Project Zero in Europe or Zero in Japan). All 3 parts I played so far had a great atmosphere. The 1st and the 3rd however had some flaws, it is part 2 which catched my eye and feelings (<- the reason for me voting it as no.1).
The spontaneous shock effects are also a great idea ^^
About F.E.A.R., I partly agree with Strange Angel; This game isn't really a horror game. It has it's moments though and I really liked the action in it(though the offices were so boring). Perseus Mandate had one very good shock effect imo, that's it
Doom isn't a horror "series" imo. Just part 3 included aspects of this in a good way.

You see it too? For me, it's always like this... -- Angela Orosco, Silent Hill 2
Didn't we promise each other? Together.....forever.... -- Mio Amakura/Yae Kurosawa, Project Zero 2
