Planning Of Over Clocking My Graphics Card
by Keylek » June 9th, 2011, 8:46 am
hello Everyone.
recently, i got a XFX ATI radeon hd 6950 for 230 pounds (which is now 200 p-ounds which annoys me... :( ) but anyways, apparently from this review what i have read, it is possable to turn a radeon hd 6950 into a radeon hd 6970, thats an extra 100 pounds of graphics card for free, here is the review
http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/ove ... idcard/159
like from what i have read online, the graphics ccards both have the exsact same hardware, the same processor and everything, the only diffenece is the bios, so with this bios flash to change it, it will make the card into a 6970, but yet is this wise, like apparently the 6950 is a perfect graphics card for people starting over clocking, and it is common to do this in high end gaming, but yet i have heared one or two reports of it breaking the card, but yet most reports have been saying it has worked perfectly, so i am asking do people think i should do this to get an extra 100 pounds out of my graphics card?
like from what i have seen online, if i do turn it into a 6970 everything will eb the same as the 6970, the FPS, the speed, the shaders, the only diffence is the power intake, but yet this can apparently can also be changed (i have a 700w PSU and the 6970 needs around 270w, so i should be fine anyways, the 6950 uses 230w)also cooling seems to not be that bad as well, anyways, i will be getting a new case soon to help with cooling and i currently hhave a desk fan blowing into the computer, yet dont worry about that, i clean the dust out regually like at least once a month. anyways, from what i have seen at E3 this month with skyrim, it will be a good welcome to have the extra boost for the graphics card.
anyways please post what you think about this and if you think i should do it or not, like i do not want to damage my grapghics card, like i do not have enough money to buy another one any time soon so i would like to make sure this works properly first before i just jump onto it.
with thanks

Well if you do it right it should all work fine but do remember if you do overclock it voids your warranty so if it does go poof you won't be covered.
There is no such thing as a stupid question, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots.

thats what i am worred about, thats why i want to know if this overclocking will not do that, like it is the same hardware as the 6970 the same everything, but yet i dont want to screw it up, also will i have to download the drivers then for the 6970 then? like i think you must do seing i am chaning the bios but i just want to make sure

Ok I had a quick look at what they are doing, it looks like a pretty straight forward bios change, be sure to back up your bios and if anything does not work you can restore it's original settings. Overclocking it is some what more complicated it involves increasing the power the card is using to increase speed. The bios change should cause no harm and be easily reversible and can be done without overclocking the card. you shouldn't need to change your driver's (I think). In the end you will always be taking a risk when ever you screw with hardware like this. If you do decide to go through with it do lots of research so you know what to expect.
also I dug a little deeper there might be an issue with the power connector's. If you overclock like this. Is an issue you might want to look into before deciding.
That about all the advice I can really give I tend to not like overclocking, it makes components hotter and nosier and shortens their lifespans.
