Gothic 3 Patches and Addons

Postby Maigrets » May 4th, 2011, 3:10 pm

Here's some info for anyone who has played Gothic 3, (or for anyone thinking about it), especially before the Community Patch team got to it and fixed it.

I won't bore people to tears with how I think the Gothic series is one of the best rpg series I've ever played, and still play, because that would go on for ages.

Suffice to say the original game was barely playable and had a lot of problems and bugs which are practically non existent now and the game runs smoothly instead of jerking and stuttering like it used to. Considering it's a totally open, massive world with no loading screens at all and almost no boundaries it's handled very well IMHO. After the patch that is.

This is the final version of the Community Enhancement Patch 1.7.4 download. It's a BIG file at 914mb, but for fans of the series and new ones, it is absolutely worth every mb.
Not only does it fix all the bugs it also adds a version of HDR, options for rebalanced combat and alternative enhanced NPC and creature AI. There's a small description of the game as well as a HUGE changelog at this link.

There is another large Content Addon which adds new hi resolution textures, new armours and weapons, a new menu, NPC's and lots more.
English:

It's available in English and German. It does require the above Community Patch and also Questpacket 4.2 which adds new quests and more content which can be downloaded here:

The Questpacket is German(unless they have translated it) but all dialogues and menus etc have been translated in English as well. You would only need to know how to install which is easy as it's an exe.

I notice I have some downloading to do since it's been updated a couple of times since I first found it. (:D

Now, onto something a little less enthralling, but it completes the story of Nameless, the hero of the Gothic series. BTW there's a reason he's called that.

Gothic 3:Forsaken Gods.
This game was tragic when it was released and totally unplayable. It wasn't made by the original Gothic team, but was outsourced to an Indian developer called Trine who had no understanding of the story or the actual world. It was a mess of missing quests, disappearing NPC's, missing dialogue and more bugs than ten games put together.

The Community Patch team have resurrected the game so it's at least playable by virtually rewriting it from the ground up and have done a wonderful job. However, it's still not a great game by any means as they only fixed it's problems to the best of their ability so it's playable and didn't add content as with Gothic 3. They have added more creature spawns like dragons, lizards and alligators and other monsters and undead where there were none.

It would probably be difficult to get the DVD version these days, but I bought it years ago and it's been gathering dust until recently and now I've nearly finished it. Unlike G3 which I've replayed numerous times because of the many ways to play and develop the character, this game is probably a once only to complete the story.

The Enhanced Patch is a free download if you already have the game like I do, but it's now available on STEAM complete with the patch for a cheap price.

Patch download with lots of mirrors and a torrent option. 1.45GB.

It's in English as well as several other languages. The Community team have gone on to create their own game development team called Mad Vulture Games. They deserve the success many times over. |salut|

There are actually other mods for those games as well and for Gothic 2. With The Night of the Raven Official addon that game is a classic and the best of them all, I think.

Actually I never thought of looking for Risen mods until you mentioned it. I loved Risen and I'm waiting eagerly for Risen 2.

This is all I could find, but there might be something of interest there. Only small stuff really.

Risen didn't need "fixing" like the other games so there was no need for huge patches. Maybe now Risen 2 is coming people will make mods for it as well if there is an editor.

Personally, I think the Gothic series (patched) and Risen are very complete as far as being good rpg's and have a lot of replay value. Some people complain that you can't choose a gender, but that's because the story is based around one man and I feel it wouldn't work for a female character. Even though I'm female I don't really care about that part.

It's the same with Two Worlds 1 which is a very underrated game IMHO. You can only be male there too because the story demands it. Again, after some huge patches it's very playable and almost a cross between Gothic games and others like Oblivion. Plus it has horse combat which works OK, but at least it's there.

As much as I like Oblivion, it's a game I wouldn't bother playing over and over if it couldn't be modded. One play through would have been enough for me without mods. It lacks too much that games like Risen and the Gothic series have like a real living world and NPC's that react to your actions, real factions, choices and consequences, better combat and lots more.

Two Worlds 2 never came here to Australia because the distributor went broke and couldn't deliver. It's a very different game than the first one though and has been widely criticized.
