Silent Hill The Movie: A Retrospective
by Strange Angel » October 24th, 2009, 9:43 am
I've been meaning to do this since an old friend of mine visited me and we watched a bunch of movies together. Including Silence of The Lambs, Hannibal, Troy to deviate a little then Silent Hill. So I watched it again recently. On it's own merit it's okay, not really good though. Just okay. What butchers it though is the fact it carries the name of a franchise that I don't think can be duplicated in film format. Only an interactive medium can really give you the utter paranoia the games stick in your head while playing them. I will say the first 20 minutes or so of the movie are impressive in that they are spot on in terms of the original games unforgettable opening. Well at least to me. Right down to those creepy as hell baby monsters.
In the game the noises those baby things made used to unnerve the hell out of me, and in the movie yeah they were well done. But after that opening the movie starts to go downhill, relying too much on fandom, and just becomes a generic horror movie. It's alright on it's own merit if you pretend you never played Silent Hill, but I've seen much better horror movies.
Overall I still find nothing really spectacular about the movie. It's opening 20 minutes were great, but then after that it quickly dies down and really becomes kind of dull at least to me. However if you dissociate the games from the film. It's okay! Not bad, not good, just okay. And that is all.

yeah you are right, like i have never played the first silent hill before, but i have seen some friends of mine playing it and also i have seen youtube videos of it and the first 20 Min's of the movie where spot on, like the miner on the fencing and the baby pram and everything was in the correct place, it was like i was playing the game it was that accurate apart from a few things like the police women did not chase the main characters in the game and also the main character in the game is her father, not her mother, so it was very good at the beginning, but then it did just get a bit to much for the fans trying to squeeze everything in like pyramid head [like what you have said many times that he is just made up by James imagination in silent hill to represent his more aggressive sextural side] like the a few of the characters from the silent hill game where in there like the crazy old women and also that nurse. but the nurse in the game helped out the doctor [sorry about this but i cant remember the names] but in the movie she is with the little evil girl [allesa i think] and she has her eyes gored out, so the movie did have a good idea and intention, but it just wen to hell in the end. like i have read that they made the main character the mother of the girl and not the father because they wanted to make it like all the women are trapped in this strange world yet the men are fighting each other in the real world. like apparently i have herd news that another one may be released in 2011, but lets hope that they make the next one either good or they base the second one on silent hill two because if they do i know a hell of alot of people will go and watch it because silent hill two is still seen as one of the scariest games in the world and it does have pyramid head in it, so i know alot of people will go and see it. but lets hope again they do not mess it up. like the silent hill movie was alright but like what strange angel says, it sort of made no sense after the first 20 mins and so then it was really only for the fans...
like apparently this also happened with the resident evil movies, like the first ones the fans where expecting it to be like the game in the creepy mansion with all the zombies abit like what we where expecting with silent hill, but like silent hill, it was nothing like what the fans where expecting, because of this the second and third movie went down even worse and that is why the main actress in the resident evil movies says that she is not going to to another one...
