Need A New PSU
by Keylek » February 16th, 2011, 6:50 pm
Hi again all
i am currently going to need to upgrade my psu very soon, i have a dell studio xps 8100 which is a alright computer, but apart from three things...
* Graphics are alright but not good expecally for high quality gaming
* the power supply is not that powerful
* hard drive space is below modern desktop adverage.
these things i am currently trying to improve it into a good gaming computer. i ahev already got a old 1000GB hard drive spare which i am going to add into the desktop for the extra space. also i have decided to buy the "ATI Radeon HD 5870" graphics card, due to it seems like the best ones for my needs and is in my budget which i set for the graphics card for 200 pounds. but yet now it is time to upgrade the PSU for the computer, and for me PSUs are a tricky and risky business. like i have never liked them, just the thought of wireing part of my computer incorrectly will possably cause it to fry the entire thing. yet the desktop i have now is very simple power wise compared to the older computers. the only thing i would need to take out is the main power connection to the motherboard, a 4 pin pcie cable to the motherboard, and the sata power connections and that is all, which is simple enough evern for me.
so now i am currently looking out for a new psu to go with the new psu and the extra hard drive. the current PSU i have is a DELL Chicony 350W PSU, with 4 sata power connections, one 4 pin pcie cable, one 6 pin pcie cable, the main power cable (i believe 24 wires, i dont quite know whats its called) basiclly here is a list with what it apparently has...
5v / 18A
3.3v / 17A
12VA / 12A
12VB / 18A
PSU has 4 SATA power plugs, one PCI-E and one FDD type.
... dont basiclly know what that means exsactly, but thats because i have not had to do much about psus apart from a A4 sized peice about it for college. but yet this is as much i know about the one i has now.
the kind of one i am looking for is one with 600-700 watts output which will be good for te extra hard drive and powerful graphics card. it must have at least two 6 pin pcie cables (3-4 is better) and possably a 8 pin pcie calbe, but not required, at least one 4 pin pcie cable, 4-6 sata power cables, the main power thing which fits into my motherboard, cant remember its name and dont know what i need for that, this is what i really need help with and also some cables which will come in handy in the future like some 3 pin calbes for fans and things would be handy for when the time comes for better cooling, all for around 50-85 pounds. i also though will be buying this PSU from a local shop to me called "scan". here is their list on psus between 600-700 watts
http://www.scan.co.uk/Shop/Computer-Har ... /600W-700W
like i need help ith this because i really do not know what i am looking for here. also my desktop is a normal sized desktop (not a really big one and not a mini tower) and i am looking for this psu to last awhile as well before i need to replace it, like 7 years max (basiclly aas long as the graphics card i am getting) but yet if it cant reach 7 years, i do not mind having to buy another in 3-4 years
so anyways, i hope someone can help me with this, please remember as well this computer will be used for extra things as well with time like possably an extra dvd player or a hard drive caddy or someting like that. so please keep that in mind.
anyways, thank you for reading and i hope to get some good tips soon... :)
