Mount and Blade Walkthrough

After launching the game, you will get options for playing the tutorial, playing a quick battle, and starting a new game. The tutorial demonstrates the basics of the game, whereas quick battles are good for jumping straight into the game's combat without the need to build an army. If you like, you can try out these options before starting a game.

When you start a new game, you must first create your main character. After selecting your character’s gender, the game will ask you a series of questions to flush out your character’s past. An example is: what is your father's occupation? Selecting the “An impoverished noble” response assigns a high amount of points to the ’Renown’ attribute. ‘Renown’ is important for advanced game features such as becoming a vassal, granting fiefs or starting and leading rebellions, etc.

After creating your character, you will begin the game at a random location on the map. There'll be a training field nearby, which you may visit to practice various combat skills in the game. After you have grasped the basics of the combat system, you can start trying out other ways of adventuring in the game world. Mount & Blade is a free-form game without a fixed story or scenario to follow. Achieving the different types of non-linear goals is covered in the rest of this walk-through.

1) Obtaining money: The quickest way of course is cheating. Press the 'I' key to bring the inventory window and press Ctrl+X a few times to create yourself some starting capital. Other methods of making money include trading, carrying out quests, becoming a mercenary, raiding caravans and peasant parties, stealing cattle from villages, capturing prisoners and ransoming them or selling them into slavery, etc.

2) Navigating around the map: If the cheats are enabled, you can instantly teleport your character around the map by clicking on an empty spot while holding down left-control button.

3) Building yourself an army: You can recruit basic warriors from villages for a low price. However, these will usually be poorly trained novices. Another option is visiting taverns within the towns, and hiring seasoned men-at-arms. These mercenaries will be reasonably well trained, but offer their services at a price. Also located in taverns, are NPC heroes who may be willing to join your party after you talk to them. These are very useful since they do not die in battles and keep getting experience, like your main character.

4) Getting quests: You can receive quests from nobles (lords and kings) in their castles, guild-masters in towns and elders in villages. In order to meet guild-masters and village elders, you must visit a town or village and then select the “walk around the streets” option from the menu. Once in town you must initiate dialogue and select the appropriate conversation option from the list provided. Nobles offer missions whether in their prestigious castle halls or roving around the countryside with their war parties.

5) Joining a faction as a mercenary: If you ask to undertake a quest on behalf of a noble, there is a good chance he will offer you a mercenary contract if his kingdom is at war. Just ask for quests from different lords and you will eventually be offered a contract.

6) Winning battles: Apart from entering combat yourself, battlefield commands are important for success in battles. The ‘F1’ key orders your troops to hold the position your character is currently located at. The ‘F2’ key orders them to follow you, and the ‘F3’ key orders them to attack the enemy.

You can select which warrior type the order will be given to by using the keys ‘1’ through ‘4’. The '1' key directs orders to everyone, '2' to infantry only, '3' to archers, and '4' to cavalry. You can also cheat to win a battle. Just press Ctrl + 'F4' repeatedly, until all enemies are knocked down.

7) Becoming a king's vassal: You require at least 170 ’Renown’ points before a king will accept you as a vassal. The easiest ways to get renown is to join and win tournaments or battles. You will need to complete several of these engagements (and cheat if necessary) until you have an adequate amount of ‘Renown’. You can check out how much renown you have at any time by clicking on the ‘Reports’ button.

When you have enough ’Renown’, find a king and talk to him about vassalage. After giving him your oath, you will become his vassal. After this, he may grant you villages, castles and towns that you take from the enemy.

8) Starting claimant rebellions: There are five claimants in the world who hold claims to the thrones of the Five Kingdoms. If you have 200 ’Renown’ or more, you can take up the cause of a claimant and lead a rebellion to bring him to power. In order to find the location of a claimant, you need to speak to a traveler, who you will usually come across in your visits to taverns.

I liked this walkthrough it's more like a guide with very useful information, it has some cheats in it but not enough to spoil the game.
