One question, do you intend to allow people to download from your site? If so on what scale?
I have two servers at home, the most recent one Hoola created for me and its running on a 64 bit linux operating system with a heavily modded Apache framework.
Prior to that my old server cost £26. I found it on the street and it needed a new CPU and retention bracket. It had two hard drives, a SATA 120 GB and a PATA 400 GB. You'd be amazed at what you can find lying around.
Obviously lots of RAM and a quad core setup would make a good server but most people do not tweak their configuration files correctly which leads them to believe their rig is too slow.
Personally if I were you, I would just get a shared server with a well rated hosting provider. Its much cheaper and they manage all the hardware for you. I guess it really depends on what your trying to achieve....

it will be only a very small website, so yet i do not need that much ram (i know ram is required, just by looking at the huge ammounts servers have) and there will be very little downloading. i may also use it as a private server for some games, and maybe in the future a small forum. there is no rush for it though, i currently need to find a better paied job, but that seemes to be getting harder. i also will be upgrading other things first before building up a server like a better PSU, a new secondary hard drive, and maybe a even more powerfull graphics card (yes, i like good graphics) i could have a look at my local carboot, there is a warehouse full of pcs at cheap prices, but i have never been in, because everytime i have went it has been shut, it is apparently open on saturdays though so i will be going then. see what kind of pcs i can get to turn to servers.

The saying "Never put all of your eggs into one basket" comes to mind. I don't know of many web servers which have a good graphics card. Sure, there is no reason why you can't have one but the money might be better spent on secondary computer.
Regarding the better paid job, I think we can all relate to that. Good luck with your hunt at the car boot sale.

loder, i was not on about the server when i was talking about secondary hard drives and a better graphics card and PSU, i was on about the pc which i have currently, like what i have now is alright, but i want a better one, like i know servers do not need a good grapihcs card, due to it is not needed due to no games will be played on it, or even doing anything on the internet, RAM and the CPU is whats important for a server not a graphics card.
