Puresnipe I know what you mean! People get much to competitive in online games. I mean okay the only real game I've played without friends was WoW, it being an MMO had a huge player base. But ughh first off I can go into a rant on sexism among the puerile playerbase, "there are no girls on the internets nurrr" morons. But okay I get on vent and all the guys are like, oh my god a woman! But one experience I had made me livid. I happened to be known as one of the best PvPers on my server at one time. Of course most people assumed I was a guy, I just didn't care as I found trying to correct some people to be more trouble than it was worth. However people in my guild who knew me on vent, along with my ex-b/f at the time vouching for me proved it to my guild at least. Okay so I drove one guy nuts because I was a much better PvPer than him. I remember when it started...
He was our guilds Mage Leader or whatever when it came to raiding. My main at the time was Mage as well. So he's decked out in T1 gear from MC ironic he had a female toon too. Anyway I was always slow to catch up, but at the time I had some blues and greens, where he was decked out T1 purples. So he wants to duel me outside Ironforge one day, and I accept. I beat him even though he totally outgeared me. I'm courteous and all and he drops another flag all the while on vent he's not saying a word. So I fight him again and *ahem* wipe the floor with him. This occurs 3 more times. Each time I'm nice I even offer suggestions, telling him the weakness in my build, how to utilize wards, polymorph and Iceblock against me. Instead of saying anything he just logs off.
The guildies joked about it, and most of my guildies knew they would lose if they dueled me. Whatever, but I was never discourteous and always friendly offering hints, and such. I'm just helpful by nature and never take games seriously. If I win cool, if I lose cool. But then I learn later this guy was calling me a bitch, and this and that behind my back. I talked to my ex about it as he said a lot of really sexist stuff about me. My ex was just like meh it was just talk. I get a chat log from someone in the guild who talked to this guy in private, and meh... All I can say is the guy had a thing against women, and to be beaten by one seemed to drive him nuts. My ex being the WoW junky he is kept him on because raiding was all important. The fun of the game died there. Apparently he complained about me not showing up to raids a lot. It's not like I ever got much gear even though my ex was the guild leader. I swear I only got left overs that all the mages already had and didn't need. Once I speant all my points on staff, which wasn't many, and most of the mages had the Staff of Dominance already. But my ex got so into the game he didn't care that someone was totally being a sexist jerk to me, and this guy... I gave up on WoW. Several months later for unrelated reasons I broke up with my ex, but yeah it turned me off to online gaming big time. WoWtards are one thing, but this guy was over the top and my boyfriend wasn't man enough to call this guy on it. Whatever...

ROFL. Oh my god. I can relate almost perfectly to that. I used to play SWG. I was the top spy on the server, and possibly the best commando. I could solo things that usually took a group of eight to do. In PvP, not only was I a meat grinder, but I could tank like no other. ie: I ran across the line of a PvP zone with the odds of a group and a half (12) of fully geared out people. I killed every last one, and made four of them rage log for the fact I held the line by myself. (On my mando) Gave up on the game when they completely fukked over my favorite profession of spy. Hell, I'll even put a link to a fairly recent SS of my mando. SOE is incompetent on their coding. With each "update" they make more lag. It got to the point that a 15 on 15 would crash people and the main server itself.

Granted, this toon had everything, but I earned it all myself. Nothing was given to me.
Now I'm just playing FPS's. You get more rage from placing first on BF:1942 with a kill/death ratio of 163:1 (Dumbass teamkill ran me over when I was prone)

I heard one online game which is due to be released is to allow mods to be installed and used.
If more online titles allowed mods, I'd seriously consider playing them. I get annoyed when I have to go through third party services to play a game on Steam such as Microsoft Games for LIVE.

I changed my mind on this;
While I really like offline games, MMOs recently catched my attention. Ok, the plural was probably wrong, but I definitely like megaten (shin megami tensei: Imagine) and prior to that, I played WoW on a low population server. The experience I gained says that games can be fun alone. But if you team up with players and are able to evolve your character, this fun will be multipiled by several interesting factors.
Of course, there're bad things about online games as well: Idiots

Recently I've set up a PVPGN server so Hoola, Martian and I can play Diablo 2. We got annoyed with the constant connection errors on Battle Net.
PVPGN an emulated form of Battle Net which is extremely versatile. It gives you the sense your actually playing online but without all the players. The emulator allows you to play the latest version of Diablo with any mods which support it.
I guess eventually all games will probably tailor to online users, I'm open to this idea as long as the games remain configurable and you have the option to store saved game files locally.
