Freeworlds Tides of War development

Postby Webslug » October 31st, 2009, 8:53 am

Two modders called Deety and Lilfire have recently illustrated some of their awesome work on ModDB for their mod based off the Freelancer game.

I thought some of our members would appreciate their talented meshing ability. While I'm not a star wars geek I do love the notion of flying through space and have played popular titles such as Frontier Elite and the X series.

This videos contains a glimpse of some of the new bases and systems we've been developing over the past months. The systems showcase some of the work Deety and Lilfire have been doing to bring the systems to life with large fleets that scale over one hundred kilometers across.

The Freeworlds: Tides of War development team has been busy over the past few weeks bringing the mod to life. Deety and Myself have completed putting in all the code for all the mod's small craft including the shuttles, transports and freighters of the mod. Deety has also been busy working on creating new missions for the mod, similar to the scale and nature we previously mentioned in this news piece: Battle of Yavin. We'll be releasing more details about missions as Deety completes more of the project.

As for systems, Lilfire has joined the team to help fill in the large empty space we have. By tediously placing numerous ships, bases, shipyards and container fields, we hope to breathe some life into our massive systems. Below are some images of what Lilfire has been doing with the assistance of Deety:

Fondor Shipyards

We also have head some significant development with Fondor Shipyards. The model was originally built by Overfiend and has been textured by Super D. Here are some images of the large base:

Furthermore, Qi has almost completed the groundwork of our economy. Unfortunately, there's not much to show you regarding this, but you'll have to believe me when I say that it's going to be epic :)

W0dk4 has also been busy with FW:ToW by creating many new FL Hooks for us. Some of the creations include:

* Having mass of cargo/missiles affect how the vessel will handle (More mass = sluggish)
* Preventing players from moving while in cruise (that means that players will have to point themselves in the right direction before they engage their cruise engines)
* Speeding up turning rate when you throttle down. Some of you that remember XvT/XWA know that when turning your optimal speed to turn was 33%.
* Creating a missile view mode
* Being able to rotate the vessel while in 3rd person (like XvT/XWA)
* Creating a key that causes the ships wings to fold prior to engaging cruise: B-Wing, X-Wing

And last but not least, this is the latest FW:ToW Development video so show you the amazing new bases that we're going to have populate our systems. The movie also includes some footage of the huge fleets Lilfire has been working on. I hope you enjoy it!
Please remember to comment, it helps to encourage modders with their work.

"That's no moon", nice it has the deathstar. This makes me want to dig out the old Freelancer game. Heh Babylon 5 is more my flavour, but I love what has been done here, this cleary took great effort.

I'm looking forward to seeing Frontier Elite 4 which is due out in a few years.

Starlancer was a great game, especially good with a friend on Coop. Wing Commander 4 and 5 were pretty unique games, they were more like a movie where the player could pick options which dictated the selection of the missions you played.

Hey Guys,

FW:ToW is currently in development and I'm the mod head there. We're looking to totally change the way FW used to be played. We're adopting a much more "X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter/X-Wing Alliance" type environment, with still the feel of Freelancer. Tides of War (ToW) also has merged with us for this project. We've also been fortunate enough to get ships models from the First Strike mod, thanks to Red Monkey and the crew, as well as the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade Project. Our developers have been posting up blogs for everyone to read. They're viewable to guests, so you don't need to register to view them. Although, I do encourage you to register as you can ask questions of the developers. We're also looking at creating a much more rich and diverse RP environment for players and will be hoping to get a maximum of 200 players online at once.

Here are some links I think you guys should take a look at in you enjoy the Star Wars universe. The first are two recent development videos of the mod. These videos showcase some of the models, effects and other things that you can expect to see in FW:ToW

The second is our site at MODDB. We update this regularly, so I encourage you all to bookmark it and check there often :):
Freeworlds: Tides of War ModDB site

And lastly, this is a link to all development site. You'll be able to see a lot of the new effects, models, systems, ideas we're trying to incorporate for FW:ToW.
FW:ToW Development Site

I really hope to see some of your faces there. I also wish this will satisfy those of you that enjoy Star Wars/XvT/XWA and an environment in which RP is encouraged.

If you guys have any questions, feel free to PM me on our forums, or here. I'll bookmark this link and check back as often as I can.

We're also looking for interested modellers/texturists that want to work on this development team. Those that are interested, please send an email to freeworldstidesofwar@gmail.com.

Thanks guys,
Sushi
