Rev's Free Game Roundup

Postby RevRaptor » September 2nd, 2010, 8:46 am

Good games need not cost, in fact there are a lot of good games out there that don't cost anything and I'm not talking about shitty little flash games either. But of course looking for free games can be a total pain in the A. Well not to worry your old buddy RevRaptor has trawled through the garbage dump we call the internet and found some of the best.

Firstly the rules:
1- obviously the game must be good and hopefully popular too.
2- Must be free or mostly free, shareware trials don't count.
3- Must be easily installed. This is where most abandonware games fall short, often being ridiculously hard to get running.
4- must be a game, as in not an advert pretending to be a game (facebook I'm looking at you here.)

Ok so lets get started and what better to to start with than first person shooters. lets look at the options shall we.

F.E.A.R Combat

http://www.fearcombat.org/

This is the online multiplayer component of F.E.A.R, made available for free even for those who don't own the full title. F.E.A.R. Combat includes 10 multiplayer modes, 19 multiplayer maps, and the ability to play against the owners of the retail version of F.E.A.R. as well as the other F.E.A.R. Combat users. As a single player game I quite liked fear, even if it wasn't perfect but as a multi player game it just plain rocks and it free to boot.

Combat Arms

http://combatarms.nexon.net/
Like a free call of duty, It's been said to lack depth but hey its free and it's not like Call of duty or modern warfare were dripping with depth either. All in all I'd have to to say it's a good way to get your weekly fix of violence.

Alien Arena

http://icculus.org/alienarena/rpa/

Fast, frenetic, free. These three words pretty much sum up Alien Arena, a fast paced sifi shooter with blazingly fast multi player and even an offline play mode with bots. Its fast its fun and its pretty.

Cube 2: Sauerbraten

http://sauerbraten.org/

This one should appeal to those people that like to make their own maps. Cube 2 has been designed to be as easy to mod as possible. While not the prettiest of games it graphics are bright and colourful. It's a fun little game that plays a lot like quake.

Up next, strategy games:

Command and Conquer

http://www.commandandconquer.com/classic

Ok so unless you have been living under a rock this past decade I don't really need to tell you what this is. Both Tiberian Sun and Red Alert have now been made free to the public.

Freeciv

http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

A totally free open source game inspired by civilisation. The game plays a lot like civ 2. The only real downside is that the menu's in feeciv are not as intuitive as civ 2's, still its a very good game that will eat hours out of your life like they are made of candy.

Battle for Westnoth

http://www.wesnoth.org/

Battle for Westnoth is a turn-based tactical strategy game with a fantasy theme, featuring both single-player, and online/hotseat multiplayer combat. It's graphics might be on the plain side but con't let that fool you this game had rock solid Ai, I really like this game, It's simple and very additive with a lot of campaigns to play.

Ok now to itch those trigger fingers, its arcade games:

Geometry Wars Clones

http://indygamer.blogspot.com/2006/08/geometry-wars-clones.html#gw1

If you like your action fast and furious and mixed with more than a little lsd then try these puppies out. Guaranteed to get the pulse racing.

ABA Games

http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/

Kenta Cho, He makes good games, hit the link and see for yourself.

And last but not least action games (and a few games defying categorisation)

World of Tanks

http://www.worldoftanks.com/

Umm what can I say about this one, Is it a mmo is it a fps, maybe is a strategy game? Well It's all three really. A 3d mmo featuring fighting vehicles of the 30's -50's. this game plays more like counter strike than WoW. Strategy and co-operation and the key to success in this game.

Cave Story

http://www.acid-play.com/download/cave-story/

Don't let the graphics fool you this game is stellar. A real gem plays a lot like metroid or castlevania.

N

http://www.thewayoftheninja.org/n.html

Oh I am so hopelessly addicted to this game. Control a little ninja, stay away from the little robots. awesome minimalist graphics and cool inertia based controls will have you hooked for hours.

Well that's all I got for now. I'll update this list as I find more games. Happy gaming boy's and Girl's  |salut|
There is no such thing as a stupid question, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots.
